Pet Wellness Screenings

To keep your pet happy throughout every life stage, we recommend that you bring them to a veterinarian at least once a year for a wellness screening. Each screening begins with a weight check and includes a comprehensive examination of the skin, coat, ears, nose, and teeth to determine if there any infections or other abnormalities. We also examine the legs, joints, and abdomen to check for certain reactions, such as lumps or pain. The heart beat and lungs are also examined to check for heart murmurs and unusual lung sounds.

We implement wellness screening blood work at every age, beginning with puppyhood/kittenhood, so we can create a trending laboratory profile and monitor organ function annually. If we detect any problems, these profiles allow us to address them sooner, increasing the chances of successful treatment. This allows us to get the full scope of your pet’s overall health so we can make treatment recommendations and keep your companion healthy well into their golden years.

Depending on your pet’s health status, age, species, and lifestyle, we may also suggest vaccinations, internal diagnostics, and lab work to examine them internally. This allows us to get the full scope of your pet’s overall health so we can make treatment recommendations and keep your companion healthy well into their golden years.

Pet Vaccinations in Owensboro, KY

Pet Vaccinations

Vaccines are designed to help prepare the body's immune system to fight the invasion of disease-causing organisms. Vaccines contain antigens that mimic these organisms, which then stimulate the body’s immune system, but without the actual disease being present. As a result, the body develops immunity to that specific disease, so if an animal is ever exposed to the real disease, the immune system can either fight it off completely or lessen its severity. To protect your dog or cat from potentially-fatal diseases and viruses, we recommend the following vaccines, beginning at 6 weeks of age:

Feline Vaccines

  • Rabies
  • FVR-Feline Rhinotracheitis Virus (feline herpes virus type 1)
  • C-Calici virus
  • P-Panleukopenia (feline distemper)
  • FELV-Feline Leukemia Virus

Canine Vaccines

  • Rabies
  • Canine parvovirus
  • Canine distemper
  • Canine hepatitis
  • Leptospirosis
  • Bordetella (kennel cough)

Vaccinations and schedules vary and are dependent on breed, age, and lifestyle. Our doctors can customize a schedule for your pet during their wellness exam.

Pet Diagnostic Imaging

Many pets are skilled at masking their health problems, especially cats, and there are many conditions that cannot be fully detected without the assistance of diagnostic imaging technology. That’s why Wills Animal Hospital uses ultrasound and digital radiology technology to examine our patients internally, allowing our doctors to make more accurate diagnoses.

Ultrasound: The ultrasound exam, also known as ultrasonography, is an imaging technique that uses ultrasonic waves to view internal body structures. This technique is non-invasive and is used to examine the liver, kidneys, and other organs.

Digital Radiology: Digital radiology allows us to safely and efficiently examine pets internally to detect fractured bones, foreign bodies, and other abnormalities. With digital technology, the process is much faster than with traditional X-rays, which means less time in the exam room for your pet.

Laboratory Diagnostics

Laboratory diagnostics allow us to detect the functionality of the internal organs and detect diseases and other health conditions that cannot be detected by the standard wellness exam. Below is a list of the three most common laboratory tests we conduct.

  • Blood test (CBCs, chemistries, and cytologies): tests internal organ functions and detects problems such as anemia or infection
  • Heartworm test: tests for the presence of adult heartworms
  • Urinalysis: provide information about the bladder, liver, pancreas, and other organs
  • Fecal exam: tests for intestinal parasites

Pet Surgery in Owensboro, KY

Soft Tissue Surgery

The doctors at Wills Animal Hospital perform a variety of soft tissue surgeries on both our large (equine) and small (feline and canine) patients. All equine surgeries-which consist primarily of routine surgeries-are performed out in the field. For more complex surgical procedures, we refer patients out to a local specialist. Below is an incomplete list of surgeries we perform:

  • Laser spay/neuters
  • Tumor removals
  • Enucleations
  • C-sections
  • Amputations
  • Cystomies
  • Laser declawing
  • Thyroidectomy
  • Laparotomy
  • Anal sacculectomy

All surgical procedures are performed under general anesthesia. We strongly recommend pre-anesthetic blood work for all pets, but it is required only for pets over the age of 7. Our staff monitors every patient throughout every phase of surgery until they are released from our care. For more intense surgical procedures, we may place a catheter and administer IV fluids.

Pet Laser Therapy in Owensboro, KY

Pet Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment option that uses a beam of light to treat a number of conditions in horses, dogs, and cats. This therapy option is proven safe and effective and backed by clinical studies both in veterinary and human medicine. Here at Wills Animal Hospital, we use cold laser therapy to treat arthritis, joint, and tendon issues; help heal wounds; treat lick granulomas; manage pain; and treat several other conditions.
